PRESS RELEASE - FOR SA CONDEMNS ATTACK AT MALMESBURY MOSQUE

Union Buildings Pretoria

Freedom of Religion South Africa (FOR SA) is appalled to learn of the senseless attack at a Malmesbury Mosque yesterday, 14th June 2018. We believe that this is a very concerning indication of the lack of religious freedom and religious tolerance in South Africa, despite our Constitutional protections in terms of section 15. FOR SA calls upon the government to investigate this matter to the fullest extent of the law and to ensure that religious freedom, and freedom of conscience and believe, are promoted and protected at all times as a fundamental human right which our Constitution grants us. We also take this time to extend our sympathies to the Muslim community, and in particular to the relatives of those who lost their lives or where injured in this senseless attack. We would like to encourage all people to continue to build relationships of respect and trust with people of different religions so as to facilitate deeper mutual understanding, reconciliation and cooperation for the common good.
