
Advocate Reginald (Reg) Willis SC
Advocate Reg Willis SC is a member of the Johannesburg Society of Advocates, and he practices as part of the Duma Nokwe Group of Advocates in Sandton. He was called to the Bar in 1995 and was appointed Silk (Senior Counsel) in May 2021. Between 2017 and 2021, he also served in various acting judicial appointments.
Advocate Reg Willis SC has extensive experience in litigation, having appeared in most divisions of the South African High Court, as well as in multiple cases before the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court of Appeal, the Labour Courts, various tribunals, and arbitration forums. In addition to his practice within South Africa, Advocate Willis also has international experience, having arbitrated in Europe under the auspices of the International Chamber of Commerce.
His practice primarily focuses on public law, including a wide range of administrative law matters, environmental law, and mining law. He has extensive experience in constitutional litigation, especially concerning constitutional rights and public interest issues.
In the field of private law, Advocate Willis handles a broad spectrum of commercial and corporate law matters, including insolvencyand business rescue. He is also highly skilled in company law, specifically under the 1973 and 2008 Companies Acts, and has a vast portfolio of contract law matters. His expertise extends to delict law, where he handles cases involving pure economic loss, personal injury, medical negligence, and fraud-related claims. Advocate Willis also practices in the areas of unlawful competition, intellectual property law, and matrimonial and family law, as well as appearing in arbitration, tribunal, and inquiry matters.
In addition to these areas, Advocate Willis has experience in anti-corruption matters, including criminal law, labour law, insurance law, and civil claims. He also deals with issues in eviction law, aviation law, property law, and matters concerning pension funds and medical schemes.
One of Advocate Willis’s key areas of specialisation is religious freedom as guaranteed under Section 15 of the South African Constitution. He has focused on the rights enshrined in sections 9, 10, 14, 16, 17, 18, 28, 29, 31, and 36, with particular emphasis on the development of human rights jurisprudence related to the freedom of religion. He is particularly interested in how this right interacts with other fundamental rights in the Constitution.
