PRESS RELEASE by Freedom of Religion South Africa (FOR SA)13 May 2019For immediate distributionFOR SA ROADSHOWS TO VISIT KEY SOUTH AFRICAN CITIES TO UPDATE ON CURRENT THREATS TO RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IN SOUTH AFRICAFreedom of Religion South Africa (FOR SA) has announced that its team will be visiting multiple cities across South Africa to meet with religious leaders and to present an important update on key issues where freedom of religion is under threat. Commencing in East London on May 21stand 22nd, the FOR SA Roadshow will conclude with an event on June 24th in Port Elizabeth, with other venues including Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Bloemfontein. Other events and cities are still to be added due to popular demand. The FOR SA Roadshow is free of charge and focuses on important, current, cultural and legal challenges to freedom of religion, specifically in South Africa. The freedom to believe (more particularly, to say what it is you believe and to practise your beliefs) without fear of persecution or punishment by the State is increasingly under attack through legislation and legal cases coming before State commissions and courts.“This is our first Roadshow of 2019 and the most important to date”, said Michael Swain, Executive Director of FOR SA, “We are facing threats as varied as the CRL’s proposals for what would effectively be State regulation of religion, erosion of the autonomy of religious organisations, the danger of inappropriate sex education being added to the school curriculum, the subversion of parental rights and more.”The FOR SA Roadshow is presented by those at the forefront of defending the rights and freedoms in this area, which are granted by Sections 9 and 15 of the South African Constitution. These meetings will highlight recent developments, as well as inform and equip people on how best to engage with the issues. FOR SA will provide accurate information and knowledge to enable individuals, churches, businesses and schools to respond appropriately to these threats. The dates and booking options are on the website or via their Freedom of Religion SA Facebook page.ENDS.For more information, contact:Daniela EllerbeckLegal Advisor, FOR SAEmail: daniela.ellerbeck@forsa.org.za
