“Regulating Religion” - what’s the deal?

In this briefing paper, the Southern African Catholic Bishops Conference (Parliamentary Liaison Office) considers the recent Report by the CRL Rights Commission on the “Commercialisation” of Religion and Abuse of People’s Belief Systems, including recommendations for the broad-scale regulation of religion in South Africa. The SACBC’s paper analyses the Commission’s investigation and recommendations, and concludes that the isolated examples of abuse and exploitation identified in the Report, “do not seem to justify the exceptionally intrusive and directive nature of the remedies the report proposes”.
