Freedom of Religion South Africa (FORSA) has been in contact TODAY (May 14th, 2019) with Mr Elijah Mhlanga in theDepartment of Basis Education, who confirmed that they have conducted a processof consultation to review the “life skills” curriculum, which will includecomponents of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE).
Mr Mhlanga confirmed that “Dr Eve”, asex therapist whose liberal views on sex and human sexuality are well-known,has been a member of the team reviewing the curriculum. He was very unhappythat she had broken a confidentiality agreement and spoken to the media. Hesaid that this was premature because the Department has not yet completed theirresearch and the writing/publication of the new curriculum, which is due forimplementation in 2020 after they have also conducted extensive teachertraining.
When asked specifically whether (ornot) parents would be given the opportunity to see the curriculum in advanceand to know what it contained before it was taught to their children – as wellas have the right to withdraw their children from exposure to such teachingshould it conflict with their values as parents – he said that he would onlyrespond to this in writing.
